You already invaded his privacy by going through his phone. Hacking is not the way to go here. Hacking is illegal and there's no good reason to ever do it to someone, especially someone you know.

Tell him of your suspicions and ask if they're true. Fess up to looking in his phone and ask to see the messages if he has nothing to hide. Just be prepared for him to dump your butt because you're too snoopy.
