How can I talk to my crush?

So I have a crush on my guy friend. I'm a kind of socially awkward and shy person, and it doesn't help that my crush on him makes the situation more awkward. I've liked this guy since grade 9 (I'm in Grade 12 now). My friend is closer to him than I am (she's known him longer) and she said he's really awkward with dating, which is a problem because I am too. I want to ask him to go to prom with me but he has told our whole group of friends that he's not going. Does he really mean that? I'm going to be the only girl in my group of friends that wont have a date to prom because I can't get the guts to ask. Every time I try, I panic and get all shaky. Plus every time I try to get a chance to talk to him our friends are around, which adds a lot of pressure. How do I get him alone, and how do I talk to him/ask him???

Tell your friends about this so they can give you space to do this and/or give you the ultimatum of ask him or we're not friends anymore

I am exactly like you, only I haven't asked a guy to prom. I think if you haven't already tell your friend and they'll/she/he will help you get the courage. even try texting him (if you can or facebook, bbm etc) and say could you please talk to him in private.
don't worry about what he says to his friends because boys always act differently with a girls so please I wish you with all my heart that you do because you deserve someone,
