why did they ruin ebay with big advertisements on the format?

someone recently said this when i asked what had changed about ebay over the years

''It used to be a fairly plain layout, now they have huge adverts and big pictures with personalised recommendations or what's popular. The search results used to be more like Google or Amazon search results, now it's more like searching Google Images.''


i noticed these changes about ebay to, and just wondered why they did it? why they changed ebay ?
