Is there a way to restore my Firefox profile?
I originally came here to ask if there was someone I could see who could fix my computer, because I had a problem with the browser I haven't been able to repair myself for years. . Anyways, that bit doesn't matter. Instead of giving me what I wanted, someone gave me advice..They said to do a CLEAN uninstall of Firefox, which I always dreaded to do because I had so many bookmarks.

And I followed their link, which gave me instructions on how I can back up my bookmarks by going into %APPDATA%/mozilla/firefox/profiles and then copying the "01il1kyu.default" folder to an external hard drive or USB..(I have an external hard drive), so I did that.

So I reinstalled Firefox, and..I don't know what to do from here..I tried pasting the profile from the external hard drive to the folder, replacing the new one..And Firefox stopped working. So I restored my computer, to try to get my bookmarks back. No go.

So, am I f*cked or am I royally f*cked?
Great. So I guess I did a complete f*cking restore. I tried to sync Chrome and Firefox, and still nothing. That stupid asshole. I knew I shouldn't have f*cked around with anything, but nooo.."I hadn't tried that yet!". Well, now I have..and not only is my computer still f*cked, but now my bookmarks are gone.

At least I could tough out the problem..BUT I HAD MORE THAN A HUNDRED BOOKMARKS!!!

if you did a complete restore you are Royally Fu**ed. If you just did the repair restore
then you still may have a chance. Just make sure you sign in with the same username and password you had originally. Since bookmarks are online and cannot be accessed offline. You should be able to recover everything. I have done so many times myself.

Something else you can do is to install Google Chrome. Then sync everything together with the settings button. And it will import your files from all prior browsers.
Including your firefox and bookmarks.

1) Locate your profile folder
The default location of the Firefox profile folder is %APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\xxxxxxxx.default\.
%APPDATA% is shorthand for the C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\ folder, which depends on your Windows user account name.
xxxxxxxx represents a random string of 8 characters.
You can locate your profile folder using these instructions:
1 )Click the Windows Start button, and select Run….
2) Type in %APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\ and then click OK.
Windows Explorer will open the Profiles folder, which contains a folder for each profile.

2) Backing up your profile
To back up your profile, first close Firefox if it is open and then copy the profile folder to another location.
At the top of the Firefox window, click on the File menu and then select Exit
Locate your profile folder, as explained above.
Go to one level above your profile's folder, i.e. to %APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\
Right-click on your profile folder (e.g. xxxxxxxx.default), and select Copy.
Right-click the backup location (e.g. a USB-stick or a blank CD-RW disc), and select Paste.

3) Restoring a profile backup
At the top of the Firefox window, click on the File menu and then select Exit
If your existing profile folder and profile backup folder have the same name, simply replace the existing profile folder with the profile backup, then start Firefox.
Important: The profile folder names must match exactly for this to work, including the random string of 8 characters. If the names do not match or if you are restoring a backup to a different location, follow the steps below.

4) Restoring to a different location
If the profile folder names do not match or if you want to move or restore a profile to a different location, do the following:
Completely close Firefox, as explained above.
Use the Firefox Profile Manager to create a new profile in your desired location, then exit the Profile Manager.
Note: If you just installed Firefox on a new computer, you can use the default profile that is automatically created when you first run Firefox, instead of creating a new profile.
Locate the backed up profile folder on your hard drive or backup medium (e.g., your USB-stick).
Open the profile folder backup (e.g., the xxxxxxxx.default backup).
Copy the entire contents of the profile folder backup, such as the mimeTypes.rdf file, prefs.js file, bookmarkbackups folder, etc.
Locate and open the new profile folder as explained above and then close Firefox (if open).
Paste the contents of the backed up profile folder into the new profile folder, overwriting existing files of the same name.
Start Firefox
