Like a volunteer, I hardly know anyone and I don't have much money, I only have the goodness of my heart. I want to help in some way and make a difference but I'm not sure how.

You just have to do research. There are tons of groups like this.

The summer I left high school, I spent three months living in Mali. It's an extremely poor nation; I worked with a French aid group (I took French in high school, they speak French in Mali so it was really just my French teacher giving me the connections.) It was a great experience. No, I didn't have many first world luxuries. I stayed in one of Mali's nicest hotels and the electricity still went out often, it was 2006 and there were no working TVs or Internet, and the water that came out of the faucets was occasionally yellow.

But it was still amazing, because I learned about the Mali culture, about the people. African people are extremely nice and friendly and generous. The city was very dangerous and yes, there were people who tried to rob me because I obviously don't look African (I'm white, very pale and Irish American actually). They really appreciate the help.

But yeah, there are tons of different group trips. I went with a group of mixed people from France, Canada, the U.S., and Britain (all either native French speakers or French students because it was a French orginazation.) We helped build houses, assisted a Mali electric company in building wires to spread electricity, and taught French (for free) to local populations.

It matters what part of Africa. Like Libya or Egypt? You can fly there and donate to charity. If it's like Kenya or Somalia, search online.
