Post a lot of funny tweets on the trending topics. That's the way I got a lot of followers. I got 700 in just a week by just being my funny self on TT and i ended up getting soooo many retweets on things

you need to tweet about a very specific topic and be polemic about it, so other people start replying and follow you, also get your own blog or site and build an audience there first and then promote your twitter account from there.

if you have no audience whatsoever and you are not a celebrity or a brand, it's certainly extremely hard to gain an audience from scratch on twitter.
