Sandy Hook Elementary?
I have to write a media analysis paper for school. We have to choose a topic that has received media coverage in the last two years. I chose to write about Sandy Hook. I just need a little help or a second opinion before I begin writing. My main theme is violence in the media. My main points are: gun control, glory, tragedy. Gun control is pretty obvious. I will discuss about the issues we're facing with it. Glory is when the media tends to glorify the shooter. They will constantly show his picture, and talk about his personal life. And tragedy is when the media showed and spoke more about the victims and their families. I just feel like there are other points I'm missing.

You could talk about the public perception of mental illness and how the misconceptions of the shooter being linked to things like autism and aspergers lead people to equate mental illness with violence.

From watching this story on CNN and CBS evening news and reading some news on the Internet I don't think this shooter was glorified because he had committed such a despicable act that there was no way to justify what he did. One could blame his mother for letting him live a virtual secret life in his room and not getting him enough professional help for his mental condition but still not make sense out of his actions. Another factor is he looked weird not like the case of the Rolling stone picture of Sarnoff. ;As far as violence in the media I do not think that studies have shown there is a connection between violent movies or TV shows with violent acts by people in the real world.

Gun control is obvious form the point of view of that statistics show that homicides using guns are higher in the US than in countries where there are gun control but the Supreme Court has ruled that the Second Amendment means individuals have the right to bear arms not just militias so the only controls can be local controls not some National law banning guns and at present there are differing approaches to control of regulation of firearms in each state. There are advantages and disadvantages to having a Second Amendment but if you examine alternatives the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. In Iran individuals cannot own guns and look what happened to them when they protested against their oppressive regime in a peaceful manner., They were shot down from rooftops in the streets and there have been no more mass demonstrations since then. So is living in a police state where the government can and does haul people away without due process of law and torture them and kill them in prison worth the low level of violent street crime you get in such a country which would be any Police State. The purpose of the Second Amendment is to allow Americans to rise up against any takeover of the government of a group who want to impose a dictatorial Totalitarian rule upon the American People. The way things are now local laws and ordinances can put limits on the types of guns that can be legally purchased rather than a nation wide ban on such weapons. In order to preserve the Second Amendment and reduce Sandy Hook type mass shootings a long term solution would be needed.

We need to address mental health problems as high priority instead of the way it is done now where more funds are appropriated for all other types of diseases. and insurance companies what to pay less for mental health than other diseases. We have to educate the public about mental illness to take away the stigma that is placed upon the mentally ill so that instead of being viewed with suspicion or hatred they will be treated with more sympathy so they will seek help and seeking help for mental illness is not viewed as a sign of weakness. Mostly we need better education so that violence is not viewed as a way of solving problems or is not glorified the way it often is in fiction and in the mind of many in the general public. We have violence everywhere and violence and aggressive behavior are widely condoned. No one wants to be viewed as a sissy or sensitive. Somehow violent behavior surrounding sports is accepted the Soccer riots in European countries which have killed many and the violent celebrations after a team wins a championship n the US. People need to see alternatives and accept alternatives to violent and vengeful behavior as a way of solving problems. And we need to end bullying in our schools in cyberspace and everywhere in our culture.

I would not write about Sandy Hook. The jury is still out on whether or not it was real or staged. You wouldn't want to look like a fool ...
