my mad fat diary... the book and the show?

I recently started reading Rae's actual diary and I need help with understanding the Characters. I know that the book and the show are very different. But are the names of the characters different as well? who is Bethany from the show? or Harry? if they are different could you tell me who is corresponding to who from the show? .. I dont know if im wrong but I think Bethany is Chloe and Harry is Archie maybe? idk it is confusing

It's 1989 and Rae is a fat, boy-mad 17-year-old girl, living in Stamford, Lincolnshire with her mum and their deaf white cat in a council house with a mint off-green bath suite and a larder Rae can't keep away from. This is the hilarious and touching real-life diary she kept during that fateful year - with characters like her evil friend Bethany, Bethany's besotted boyfriend, and the boys from the grammar school up the road (who have code names like Haddock and Battered Sausage).

My Mad Fat Diary evokes a vanished time when Charles and Di are still together, the Berlin wall is up, Kylie is expected to disappear from the charts at any moment and it's £1 for a Snakebite and Black in the Vaults pub. My Mad Fat Diary will appeal to anyone who's lived through the 1980s. But it will also strike a chord with anyone who's ever been a confused, lonely teenager who clashes with their mother, takes themselves VERY seriously and has no idea how hilarious they are.

A troublesome mother, her own body image and mental health issues - 16-year-old Rae Earl (Sharon Rooney) has plenty to face up to as the heroine of E4's new series My Mad Fat Diary. Based on the journals of the real-life Earl, this '90s-set drama explores the highs and lows of teenage lust, sexual confusion and cool Britannia...

"It's just so good and so refreshing and so different to anything I'd ever seen before," 24-year-old star Rooney said of Tom Bidwell's adaptation. "It was just so good to know I could audition for something and not have to change. I could audition as I am - how I look like - and I didn't have to change."

Based on Rae Earl’s book My Mad Fat Teenage Diary, comes this new series starring 23-year-old Sharon Rooney as overweight 16-year-old Rae, who is hiding the fact she’s spent time in a psychiatric unit from her new group of friends. They include the object of her desire, gorgeous geek Archie (Dan Cohen Cohen), and handsome-but-he-knows-it Finn (Nico Mirallegro)…

17 year-old Archie is the boy Rae really has a crush on. Part geeky, and with a great personality and good musical taste - Rae would love him to be her boyfriend.

Rae says: "Archie is so hot I literally want to wrap myself around his face like an angry, horny octopus. I don't even care that he likes to recite quotes from dead historical figures, I could watch his mouth move forever. When he plays the guitar I cry ACTUAL sex-tears."

Spoiler: It emerges after a couple of episodes that perhaps Archie isn't interested in Rae... or any other girls for that matter. He's gay, but still in the closet.

Chloe is Rae's longest-serving, technically "best" friend.

Rae says: "She's skinnier, more popular and better looking than me. No human can compete with her boobs. No one."


Cheeky chappy Chop is a total lad and is always up for a good time. He clearly fancies Izzy, but does he know it?

Rae says: "Chop will snort condiments for fun and knows how to organise a seriously sexy party. His softer side might be hard to see but I know it's there, under all the spliff-ends and empty bottles of Hooch."
Izzy is a happy-go-lucky 16 year-old. She isn't the brightest human to have ever lived though. She fancies Chop.

Rae says: "She is probably the happiest person I've ever met. She's never going to win a Nobel Prize or know her nine times table, but she knows how to bring the party. And that's what's important."


19 year-old Danny stays on the psychiatric ward that Rae was also in. He has quite a few issues, and always wears two hats - hence his name.

Rae says: "Danny Two Hats is sweet, generous and loves to dispense dating advice. He wears two hats to stop people interfering with his brain waves. Unsurprisingly, a long-term resident of the crazy-ward. Don't let him come to your parties."

15 year-old Tix was the girl Rae hung out with at the psychiatric ward. She has quite strong mental health issues (for example, she never wants to be touched), and is looking at Rae's rehabilitation as hope that she can one day leave the ward too.

Rae says: "The world was horrible to Tix so she hid herself away from it in the local psych-ward. Except now she can't get out."
