A lot of my facebook friends either show up, on facebook, as online or show up as on facebook messenger?

When facebook chat first came out, my facebook friend were either online or offline. Recently, facebook rolled out it's "facebook messenger" app for iPhone app store (and I think Android Market but I'm not sure). Now, a lot of my facebook friends are either online on facebook or are shown as offline but listed as on facebook messenger (when I click to on someone's photo to chat). I know that my facebook friends have jobs and other things like school and can't always be on their iPhones or iTouches or tablets. I have a friend who is either on facebook messenger or online on facebook. She is never offline and she has a job and has to sleep so I'm sure that she can't use her tablet 24/7. Is there a glitch with facebook?

The Facebook messenger app (also available on Android Market) keeps running in background all the time and keeps connected till there is data connectivity available on the devices it is installed. So even if they are not using the app, they will be shown online and if you send a message, there will be notification on the recipient's device.
