why do people want to be followed by celebrities on twitter?

Because they are egotistical, they think if someone like Justin Beiber or some other celebrity follows them, they think they will become a celebrity themselves in some respects

There are several reasons. One of which is, yes, to brag - in todays society going to school screaming 'harry styles followed me!' Is bound to get you a few popularity points.
Two; for a second, that celebrity knows you exist. They look through your tweets and they are aware that you breathe air.
And finally, three; when they follow you, you can DM that celebrity! Its unlikely they'll reply but its a possibilty. Would you not want to have a conversation with your fav celeb in the morning?

You will get LOADS of followers from their other fans as well as getting a follow from the celebrity. even if it's a retweet too. and of course to boast about it too to other people
