Facebook has millions of users worldwide, the vast majority of whom are legitimate users who want to share news and content with their own personal network of friends. However, spammers also have Facebook accounts with which they can send unwanted commercial or annoying messages to other users. Some Facebook spammers and hackers even develop applications with which to spam users and hijack other users' accounts for malicious purposes. Though Facebook grays out known malicious links posted in comments, messages and status updates as a means of spam prevention, you can take many steps to avoid, prevent and deal with spam on the site.

Difficulty:ModerateInstructions

1
Report deliberate spammers to Facebook. If you inadvertently add a new friend and discover the user is using the account to post scams, phishing links, viruses or other kinds of deliberate online spam, you can and should report this user to Facebook. Hover your mouse over any of the user's status updates, then click the "X" that appears in the upper right corner of the status. A drop-down menu appears; click "Report Post or Spam" at the bottom of the menu. If you believe the content is abusive or constitutes harassment, click the "Report" link in the confirmation text Facebook posts when you report a post for spam.

2
Block spammers from posting to your Wall or sending you messages by visiting the spammer's Facebook profile, then clicking "Report/Block This Person" link at the bottom of the left column. A dialog box appears in the middle of the page, prompting you for details about your report. Check the box next to "Block [username]" and click the blue "Continue" button. Facebook posts a confirmation message when you've successfully blocked the user. Click the blue "Okay" button to close the pop-up box.

3
Let your friends know if you see their accounts suddenly start to post spam or scam messages. Do not click on any links that seem spammy or suspicious, even if it's coming from a trusted Facebook account. Your friends may have accidentally granted access to Trojan applications that hijack their accounts and post spam to their news feeds without their permission or knowledge. Send your friend a private message, email or comment letting them know that they may want to adjust their privacy settings and check the applications they've given access to their accounts.

4
Check your account's privacy settings at least once per month to view all the apps and third-party applications that have access to your account. This ensures that your account has not been hijacked or hacked by an unwanted app, virus or other malicious program. While logged in to your Facebook, click "Account" in the upper right corner of any page on the site, then select "Privacy Settings" from the drop-down menu that appears. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click the "Edit Your Settings" link below the "Apps & Websites" section in the lower left corner. Click the "Edit Settings" button in the "Apps You Use" section to view a list of all third-party applications that have access to your account. Ensure that they're all apps that you want to give access to.

5
Remove access to your Facebook account for any spam, virus or other unwanted apps. Click the "Remove Unwanted or Spammy Apps" link in the "Apps You Use" section of your "Apps & Websites" dashboard in your privacy settings. Scroll down to the app you want to remove. Click the "X" at the right end of the row that contains the name of the app you want to remove. Click the blue "Remove" button in the confirmation dialog box that appears, then click "Okay" to close the box. Repeat as necessary for any other unwanted apps you see in the list.

6
Check your Facebook Wall regularly --- once a week or once a month --- to ensure that any spam apps haven't hijacked your account and are posting spam to your account without your permission. If you see a message on your wall that you're sure you didn't post, check your apps permissions in your privacy settings as described to check for spam applications.
