Ethernet connection issues?
I'm not sure if I'm going to be able to get any help here on this, but I recently moved into a dorm for school and we have ethernet in our dorms instead of wifi. I tried registering through the school's guidelines and apparently it didn't work and I've been forgetting to talk to IT about it and I'm not sure if I missed my chance. For the setup, it says I need to plug it into the jack and then register the physical address. Does that mean the computer being registered needs to be hooked up in the jack for it to go through for registering? Because I need to use internet to register it and the labs are closed for me to use a different computer to register it. I'm not sure if anyone will know what I'm talking about, but any help would be appreciated. Also, there are 4 numbers under my physical address in the command prompt. Is the first one the one that I use? Any help is appreciated; I'm not very good with computers.

If it is anything like hotel/motel internet, if you connect an unidentified computer and try to use a web browser they automatically redirect any place you try to go to a local server that in that case asks you to agree to their terms and remembers your MAC (hardware) address for 24 hours.

A MAC address is 6 pairs of hexadecimal digits that uniquely identify your network interface and different for each interface (your WiFi MAC if any, is different from your ethernet MAC). In Windows it is shown as 6 pairs of hex digits separated by dashes as "Physical Address".

I don't know if your school has something like that which would have you login and automatically remember your MAC address, but that would require doing it from the computer you are trying to register. Where do you end up if you try to connect your computer to the wall jack and try to go somewhere with a web browser?
