Can you recommend an internet speed?

I am a student living in New York City. I just moved into a new apartment and am looking at wireless plans. What would be a good internet speed to look for? My apartment supports RCN and Time Warner. I use my computer for homework, streaming movies/TV shows, and minimal downloading (I only download things my university provides me for homework or for class materials). I know that anything less than 10mbps is far too slow, but what range is the best to get work done on?

Also, I have friends who come over often and connect to my wireless as well off of their phones. I do not know if this will affect the speed that would be optimal for me.
