I dont really get what they both are and can you still access the internet on your phone or use apps which require internet connection without them? i mean if you're in town or somewhere and not actually connected to a home wireless network

They are the terms used to describe the mobile data used by phones. They enable the use of internet when you're not on Wi-Fi. You can't access the internet without them.

3G and 4G are required to acess the internet without a wifi connection. They are the internet provided through the cellular network from whatever provider you have. 3G is older technology and tends to go pretty slow. 4G is new technology and therefore not available everywhere but it is much faster. So basically, the only way your phone can access Internet are if it is connected to a WiFi network, or connected to a cellular network, 3G or 4G (G means generation, so 4G is the fourth generation of this technology)

3G and 4G are both types of internet connections. 4G is newer and faster than 3G
