Is it normal for guys to wrestle shirtless in compression shorts?

I used to wrestle and the other day I was hanging out with a friend who wrestles who actually has mats in his house. He's definitely a better wrestler than me, but I'm at least a weight class or two bigger than him. Anyway, he asked me to wrestle him on the mat at his house when we were hanging out, and I was like, "Ok, cool." Well, when we went to get on the mat, he pulled his shirt off and stripped down to compression shorts. I thought it was kinda weird, I was wearing shorts and a tank top anyway (he had been wearing jeans and a t-shirt), so I wrestled him but kept all of my clothes on. He didn't really act weird about it or anything, but is that normal for guys to wrestle in something like that? Should I have taken off my shirt, maybe even wrestled in my boxer briefs (I guess they are kinda like compression shorts, but maybe it's not the same)? Or was that as I weird as I felt it was?

That is actually pretty normal. Believe it or not, someone actually did a survey on this. The most preferred uniform option actually was shirtless with compression shorts, preferred 2 to 1 over the singlet. I would also say wrestling in your boxer briefs would have been fine. I actually saw a discussion about that on Facebook a while back and most guys thought it was no big deal, basically the same as compression shorts. One of them even pointed out a wrestler and mma fighter who had pics on his profile training in boxer briefs. Particularly under the circumstance, since it was just the closest thing you had and you were already wearing them, I don't think there would have been anything weird about it. Hope that makes you feel a little more comfortable next time (and around your friend in general, he's not weird).
