Connect Two computers via a switch and connect to a internet connection.?

I got this new switch (Net gear) to be able to connect my laptop and desktop to a single internet connection. Now i am facing a problem which seems to be irritating. If i connect my laptop through switch then i am not able to connect my desktop and vice versa. Can this issue be resolved?
I have a broadband connection. How do i find out the ip address allolacted to my desktop and the laptop? What i mean is I cannot connect to the internet; it says verify your usernameand password even when i have entered the correct password and username.

What is stopping you. Do you mean you cannot get an internet connection?
Which type of internet connection?
Connect both laptop and desktop, then find out which ip address is being allocated to both. Sounds like the router isnt giving one to both,..
