Users of social media leave their accounts open and so thieves can find their email and their hometown and address and much more personal information about them. They send emails to the person asking for more personal information such as something about their bank account and so on, and people who are not savvy sometimes respond. Mostly these thieves can figure out how to use the ordinary information posted on social media sites to do their damage.
