Hi Beth,

A custome domain name is a domain name that you can customize yourself and is yours. For example, a custom domain name can be http://www.mktdojo.wordpress.com.

The advantage of a custom domain name is that it is easier to remember and IT IS YOURS! Furthermore, you have more power in creating and editing the website. This is basically your website and doesn't below to wordpress or blogger.

The disadvantage might be you have to pay for it.

Majority of the domain names are not expensive unless you want some really popular ones, people sell it for a lot. Based on which website you buy it from, the prices will vary.

Having a custom domain name doesn't mean you have a website, you will require a web host to host your domain. Usually webhost services will provide domain purchase for you for a set price. You use sites such as SiteGround or BlueHost and I believe it is around 3.95 to 6.95 a month to host your domain (Purchase domain included.)

Hope this helps.

A free hosting account provides a subdomain at no cost, so your address is sort like a Post Office Box#.

YourAddress.Freehost.com

Getting a domain name officially registered to you provides a shorter name

YourAddress.com

Which looks more professional, provides a way to lookup the owner helping the trust factor for a store, (though there are ways to conceal it) and allows you to change hosts with a minimal disruption of traffic or search ranking, users can be completely unaware that you changed hosting.
Some names have resold for millions of dollars.

The going price is $10-$12 a year Though some exotic ones from old school registrars can be over $30, .info names can be found for $2 for the first year, the occasional free domain names that have appeared turn out to be search ranking poison and should be avoided.

On Blogger, your default blog domain name is like my-blog.blogspot.com . When people see the domain name blogspot.com, everybody know it's a free blog.

Custom domain means, you can replace that blogspot.com with your own domain name- if you don't have one, register a new one at the cost about only $10.0 a year from Blogger.com's dashboard directly, or go to a good domain registrar to register one, which is between $10 to $20.0 a year. The most popular domain names are .com and .net domains, like myblog.com or myblog.net.

Basically your own domain is the permanent identity for you on Internet, it's as important as you have a name in the real life. Once you get a site/blog with its own domain name, people know you are serious about your site and will be willing to deal with you.

Custom domain will help you to build your site as a brand, no disadvantages at all.
