How lucrative would it be at this time to build a classified ads website?

I want to build a classified ads website, but I'm not sure how lucrative the idea is at this time. I've researched and there doesn't seem to be information on how much revenue a site such as this typically generates. By the way, I'm only looking for constructive feedback. Thanks.

You will find it almost impossible to generate any income against Craigslist where most ads are free. Their income comes from paid business postings but without an audience no one will pay to use your site.

I think it might be possible to build a classified ads website that works, as long as you don't try to cater for everyone.

Lets say that you want to do one for classified ads for private car sales. Then you will have quite alot of car sites to compete against, but lets say that you focus on just one car brand, e.g. Audi Used Cars For Sale, then you would stand a better chance of getting ranked, and through your ranking, generating traffic. If your site manages to reach the top of Page 1 in Google, then people will be interested in advertising on your site.

You might however need to offer people to advertise for free until you get your ranking to the place you want to be, once on Page 1, people will be willing to pay you to advertise on your site.

If I would be doing it, I would make sure to go for high cost goods, and also ensure that you have a very narrow focus on the site. E.g. If you had a site that advertised Used Faberge eggs, and you were on top, I am sure that anyone who wanted to sell one, would come to you. As they are expensive, and Sotherby's Christies etc charge quite a bit to sell those kind of things, you might be able to squeese a bit out of the market. I am not sure if you could make a living on it though.

Before you get started, ensure you do your keyword research, so you know that people actually search for the thing you want people to advertise, and that the niche is not too competitive. Not too many people using your keywords already.
