Can I mine bitcoins from the library?
I'm reading about bitcoin mining and from what I gather the biggest downside is that it costs more in electricity to mine than the currency is worth...what if I go to my local library and plug into their outlets where I don't have to pay for electricity? Would that work? I'm not working right now and basically spend all day down at the library anyway, does it sound plausible?

You'll have to decide for yourself whether stealing from the library is evil.
Somebody still has to pay the electric bill. From a practical standpoint, even with big racks of custom high-speed GPUs doing the job, mining bitcoins takes A LOT of real, ("wall clock") time. With an off-the-shelf laptop, you're working with your foot in a bucket, and will probably overheat the laptop long before you get a single bitcoin. |
