What is Digital River?

My father bought me Drakengard 3 Collector's Edition which is only sold in North America through the Square Enix store. He showed me the receipt that he purchased it but the payment was sent to Digital River. I looked up the answers and all I know is it's some kind of payment option or something of the sort, but I don't know specifically what it is.

Digital River handles e-commerce for lots of software vendors, including some rather larger than Square Enix. I see them occasionally on my own bills. (And usually on the checkout page, the vendor will tell you that Digital River will appear on the statement.)
