Can I use a wired connection to a laptop to grant wireless internet?

What I have is a desktop computer that's wired up to the modem, and a laptop which connects wirelessly. I'm going to be moving soon to where it won't be possible to plug in my desktop to a modem, and I'm currently pressed for cash, and I was wondering if I could avoid spending money on a USB wireless internet stick by somehow hooking up my laptop with my desktop and allowing my desktop to use the laptop's internet connection?

Both systems are running Windows 7.

You can. You can share your internet connection from the laptop through the ethernet port.

Of course thats what ICS is for.

But maybe Virtual router would be a better option for you.

On the laptop, open the properties for the WiFi connection, and in the properties dialogue box on one of the tabs you should see the option to share the Internet Connection with other computers. This is called ICS or Internet Connection Sharing.

You will need an Ethernet cross-over cable to connect the laptop to the desktop machine.

By the way, if you connect your desktop by Ethernet and the laptop by wireless, I suspect that the device you call a modem is actually a router.
