Is it appropriate to negotiate a part time job offer?
I have my second interview tomorrow at an non-profit university. I have my Bachelor's and the position I'm being considered for is currently part- time, with the possibility of full time employment later on. The title is Project Assistant for the Regional Educational Academy for Leadership (College of Education). I would be required to update the web page, Facebook, and Twitter. Also, design marketing materials, as well as some event planning and various office duties.
This is my first time being in such a situation and I don't know if it is appropriate to negotiate salary, hours, and other aspects of a potential job offer. Is it? And what do you think a fair salary would be for a recent college grad with some experience in design and marketing?

Yes, you can negotiate. Mention what is important to you and see if something can be done. Example: I interviewed for a part-time position and found out when meeting with them that health insurance was not part of the benefits package - but they did offer it to their full time employees. I said that health insurance was important to me and was there anything that could be done. I said I'd be willing to pay more than the full-time employees paid as I would only be working part-time. Negotiating is a give and take. Paying more than full-timers portion was still much less than carrying my own individual policy.

As far as pay, a couple sites to check against would be Salary.com and Payscale.com. It's possible that the averages listed for your area might be lower than what the website says. I've found that to be true where I live. Asked a friend who's in HR and she said it might be that the people who have the higher salaries are the ones willing to fill out their info.

Employees at the university might have also posted their salaries at GlassDoor.com
