How do I register an "idea", and what does it take to build a website in the size of and similar to facebook?

Hi everyone,

I am a 23 year old who just graduated from college and tried the job market,and I cannot see myself working for somebody else for the rest of my life. I have big dreams and ambitions and I believe I can do better than what I am doing. I have an internet website in mind, something for free.. Basicallly my plan is that people will use it and when it becomes popular, I will have advertisements on it and that's how I will make my money.

I would like to know what it takes (people, resources, money etc) to create a networking website (this is not like facebook but similar in design) Also the website will include a refined search engine that matches keywords..

And my second question is : how do I register my idea so it become mine legally ?

to build a facebook like web app you should try buddypress. its an extension for wordpress which allows you to create a facebook/twitter type application.

just beware. building your own social network will not bring you riches. facebook has been around FOR YEARS. it takes time to build something like that. perhaps you should re-evaluate your expectations about making money online.

i think creating another social networking website is not a right idea.
there are big competitors which has been around for years such as facebook,twitter,tagged ..etc.not to forget friendster ..

To register an idea, you should get a patent on it. There are strict laws to getting patents though.

One that I know of, is that you have not told the idea in public. So refrain from telling anyone your idea until after you get the patent.

You should do a search for patents in your country and also patent laws. You may also want to get a patent in different countries, so no one can steal your idea after you get a patent in your country and produce the idea.

As to your other question. It takes a lot of resources, people and money to do something like that.

You would need to get a web site (not too hard), then probably a databse or similar technology. Then you are going to need to make programs or applications so that you can do all of the things you want the website to do. Then you will need to get people to make all of these things, and of course pay these people.

I think there is too much to describe in just an answer on here.
