To be on top of the Search engine list, it takes a lot of money, like corporate level money, it's not cheap. Let's say my company (Captainswag) paid $1000 to get on top, 2 weeks later, your company pays $1500, your company is now on top, the best way to advertise is through facebook, twitter, etc. etc.

Since the Google updates, it is easier to rank higher in the search engines, just by providing quality content that your visitors will like. Google is looking at content much more closely now. Simply by having quality content that offers value to the reader can actually make you rank higher then a more popular site.

The other advantage is if your visitors like your content, they are likely to share your content via social media, on their own blog or website, etc. When they do this, it created backlinks. Backlinks are links on other sites that point to your site. Search engines look at backlinks as votes. The more votes (backlinks) you have, the more important your site will appear to search engines.

You can also build backlinks yourself through social media, commenting on blogs, forums, etc. Just be very careful. Only place backlinks on relevant sites to yours and make sure your content for the backlink makes sense. Otherwise, Google could penalize your site for spamming backlinks. The other option is to use a backlink service, such as LinkFool.

I hope that helps. Just remember you don't need to spend a lot of money to rank higher.
