HTC Wildfire S Internet Connection on the go?

Hello community,
I was wondering whether the HTC Wildfire S needs an internet connection to Wi-Fi, or if you can pay to connect to the internet, or both?
I want to talk to my friend on Skype on the way to work, so please help me if you can. I haven't purchased the phone yet, however it will be a great help for when I do buy it in a couple of weeks.

If your using a online service like skype,facebook or anything that needs internet. It is obivious that you will need a internet connection. WiFi or 3G (Pay to connect). If you can skype offline then internet wouldn't exist.
