Here is a sort of an interesting question:
I am advertising a forum via ads.
Now, do I directly link the ad to the forum home page, or some high quality article/post inside?
Or does it not matter?

Any paid ad links have essentially no SEO value, so marketing effectiveness may be the main issue.

In a sponsored search based campaign you might go to a main category best matching the keyword. Placed network ads might have be matched as well, imagine you gad ads on other forums, going to the same category as the ad would make sense.

SEO, search search building backlinks are generally made to a mix of home page and inner page links, too many mistakenly only link to their home page, linking to a page most relevant to the linking page can earn better ranking and better keyword diversity.
