So there is a guy i really like and i want to start a conversation with him on facebook.
He is into music and other things 15 yr old boys are into. I have biology class with him.
Also, what are ways to drop hints that you are ready to take the relationship to the next level?

If you've done that already, just ask him "hey, how's it going?" or ask for his opinion on your new photo, or shoes, or whatever.

Screw hints! They only confuse our poor little one tracked minds. If you like a guy and you know he likes you don't be subtle unless you want to confuse him. Just be like "Hey so I figure we like each other and all what would say if I wanted to take this friendship to a more serious level?" And if he responds by saying he just wants to stay friends just play it off smoothly and say "That's cool! I can respect that I just didn't want to get the wrong idea or anything."
