Why is he messaging me when he seems happy with his new girlfriend?

My ex left me for another girl and after a series of arguments deemed that he hates me. Anyway after that I apologised stupidly and told him I still love him and always will. After this we had an arguement as he was just rubbing his new girlfriend in my face and I blocked him, I unblocked him a week later but didn't speak to him. He messaged me on Mother's Day saying to say happy Mother's Day to my mum and hope she has a great I was polite and replied thanks, please say a happy Mother's Day from me too. Later that day he asked me what I wanted for my birthday and I said he didn't need to buy me anything as he has no reason to but it's up to him more or less. A few days later he messaged me a pic of the love letters I had written him, he must hVe found them sorting his room out, we thought he chucked them away when we were together and he sent the pic saying just so you know and then the pic of the letter. I didn't reply and then on Friday night/Saturday morning at like 4am he messaged me saying hey and then a minute later was like Mia? and then he said goodnight. I haven't replied to that either in amongst all these times he's tried to speak he has added his new gf on fb put up a new picture of them deleted all photos of me and his ex girlfriend and has his new girlfriend as his whatsapp picture. So why is he speaking to me?
