Can you burn Wii games onto a disk and work on a 2008 Wii?
I had a game which I bought at EB Games some years ago, it was Animal Crossing: Let's go to the city.

After serveral months of gameplay I had lost the initial disk itself, can I replace the game with a burnt DVD with the game itself burnt on it.

Please don't call me cheap and ask me to buy the game again, I really don't want to spend money on buying the game again, all I need are answers please not comments.

u need homebrew for ur wii. there are several apps that let you play dvd's, the most popular is NEOGAMMA, but there are others that let you play games from a usb. the 1 i use is CFGUSBloader. you DO own the game, so it isnt piracy, its called "Backing Up" you're legally allowed to have a digital copy of any cd game u own.

Why bother with making a back-up disc? There's too many technical hoops to go through just for a CHANCE of making it work (& not creating a coaster in the process).

You're better off getting a USB HDD & going discless as there's a lot less headaches to deal with (beyond the initial installation process, which isn't that bad). What you'll need here is:

* Wii (RVL-001) OR Wii Minus (RVL-101) running Wii Menu 4.3 -- Wii Mini's (RVL-201) won't work for this.
* An SD/HC card, 2 GB or larger
* A USB HDD or storage device, ~100 GB or larger formatted in FAT32 OR NTFS (preferred) -- Actual storage size depends on your desired game library.
* PC w/ an SD card reader (built-in or USB) & Internet access
* WiFi Connection -- OPTIONAL, but makes the install process easier
* A copy of EVERY Game you wish to store on the the USB HDD -- While you will need the own the copy of the games you wish to rip to the USB HDD (in order to utilize the Fair Use Policy of copyright law), as long as you can get access to a physical copy of the desired games (borrowing from a friend or family member, or even renting it)... I'm not going to ask. Just don't ask for help in getting disc images, as that's where you clearly cross the line into copyright infringement & software piracy (so you're on your own at that point).

The quick rundown on the steps (as I won't go into great detail here) are:

1) Install the Homebrew Channel -- Visit http://wiibrew.org/wiki/Homebrew_setup for the instructions.
2) Install cIOS 236-- Generally required to install cIOS 249 & 250 (may be antiquated by now, but still helpful to have on hand... just in case)
3) Install cIOS 249 / 250 -- Required to run the USB Loader apps
4) Install USB Loader GX (or preferred USB Loader) onto SD card.
5) OPTIONAL: Install USB Loader GX (or preferred USB Loader) channel onto Wii -- This gives you a quick jump to it from the Wii Menu (eliminating the need to go through the Homebrew Channel each time)
6) Connect desired USB HDD device
7) Load up USB Loader GX (or preferred USB Loader)
8) Insert desired game disc & hit "Install" (or similar option) -- NOTE: Depending on the size of the game, this can take up to 20 minutes (Super Smash Bros. Brawl & Xenoblade Chronicles are on the high size, at ~7 GB). Most games take about 5 minutes or less (~2 GB).
9) Remove disc & repeat step 8 again w/ the next game disc, as needed.
10) Select desired game & enjoy!

For Steps 2 - 5, please visit https://sites.google.com/site/completesg/home for instructions (including online & offline instructions). Steps 6-9 are just initial set up, where steps 8 & 9 are only needed when you want to add a game to your discless library. Steps 7 & 10 are pretty much what you'll use afterwards.

As noted above, as long as you own the game, you are legally permitted to make a working back-up copy under the Fair Use Policy... as long as you made the copy yourself (downloading the disc image doesn't count, as that's NOT YOUR COPY) & treat the back-up copy as if it's the original (meaning that you can't play that game & loan it out to a friend at the same time). Otherwise, you're infringing on copyright law... but as long as you're not blatantly committing the crime online (like trying to pick up the just-released game, as that's just begging to get caught), you can probably get away with it.

As noted, the size for each Wii game will vary. While most games are in the 2-4 GB range, some larger titles like Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Xenoblade Chronicles, Metroid Prime Trilogy & Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword can come in around 7+ GB. On the flipside, some games like Wii Sports can come in under 0.5 GB (512 MB)... so you want to make a USB HDD (or preferred storage device) that can store around 100 GB or more to hold your game library (in short, the larger... the better)

When copying games, the Wii's DVD-ROM drive generally rips games at a rate of 7 MBps (or 0.007 GBps) when using the USB Loader's build-in tools... so please plan accordingly when ripping your game library to the USB HDD (watch a DVD, play on another game system, take a coffee / tea break, ect.), especially if it's a large library. However, you'll have to do this one time for each game.

If your Wii is connected online, you can download the game case covers for each title to make the interface a bit more user-friendly. HOWEVER, you'll need to make sure you have enough space on the SD/HC card you have in your Wii when you select this option. Again, this will take some time, depending on the number of covers you need to download (as the system will skip over the ones that are already up-to-date) & your internet connection, but it's makes the process of find the game you want to play a lot easier.

This is my ~2 MB on the subject... I hope this helps!
