I am so disgusted with people who post tons of pictures in facebook, especially if they pose in a very sensual way, or posting food picture that they ate in luxurious restaurant. What is the purpose?

Low self esteem and not much self pride as far as I can figure. Looking for both from others instead of working onearning it for themselves. What really picks my *** is when they show up wanting to be friends on my Facebook! As if I want some half naked gutter slut for a friend!

Gosh, being an older man I'm probably not the person to be attempting to answer this however!

I think we all need to feel good about ourselves and part of that self promotion is an attempt to gain admiration. In many cases this demonstrates a severe lack of self esteem, but not always. People largely respond to public opinion, unless they are mega rich and therefore don't care what people think..

To a large degree if left to its own devices, society would do a good job of regulating and policing itself, without the need for legal measures. There is the problem of course is that when members of society attempt to discriminate between what they consider is right or wrong, they are themselves discriminated against when prosecuted for discrimination!
