Simple, bid more than everyone else! But seriously, you should only bid as much as you want to pay and hope that your max bid is more than everyone else's. If you were absolutely desperate to win a particular item, yes, you'd have to bid some ridiculously high amount to be sure it ended up yours. You can always contact the seller and ask if they have a "buy it now" price that they will accept.
