I've been thinking about doing the self publishing on amazon, or Barnes and Noble. I've had my work edited, re- edited, and a cover design is almost done. I'm not looking to make money off of it. I just want to have something published.

If your ego is willing to pay to have a book published that will probably never sell that is your choice.
Seems a very expensive ego though.

Emilee - you can use both systems - Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing (Amazon KDP) or B&N Nook Press. Both works perfect. I also suggest you to use also iTunes Book Publishing (link is below). This is ideal case when you do everything.

There is alternative way when you use some ebook publishing aggregator as:
http://www.bookbaby.com/
http://www.ingramcontent.com/Pages/Digit...ution.aspx
http://www.inscribedigital.com/services/
http://www.smashwords.com/about/how_to_p...smashwords
There you publish to aggregator and they publish to KDP, NP, iTunes and even more. You just need to check what are terms of this and create account.

CreateSpace.com is a great Free self publishing house and an independent arm of Amazon.
They're print on demand which is great for the environment, they're easy and very responsive to work with and they have cover designs available are pretty good.
Then you can opt for Kindle. The books can also be available on libraries, schools, etc.
They handle shipping orders and pay royalties (you choose the price) after a threshold of $100 is reached - which is fairly common.
You have to do your own marketing but it's not that difficult. good luck !
