Google estimates that he initial version effected 3.5% of searches.

The folks at SEOmoz have some insightful thoughts on the topic, it's too early to measure what's being targeted since the fallout from Google's recent de-indexing of private blog networks have muddied the waters, avoiding too many keyword anchor text links, keyword stuffing and perhaps keyword domain names is high on the suspect list.

Here is some positive advice:

SEO has never really changed. The only thing that has changed is more spammers and those preforming in unethical techniques are getting caught. If you are interested in doing good SEO and staying off of Google's penalty radar than I suggest the following:

1) Create great quality unique content that is relevant to the user experience. If you are going to optimize the content around "How to cook steak" the content should be about how to cook steak presented in an engaging manner. It should not be a place to purchase steak unless that user information is readily available and the focus of that page.

2) Check out SEOMOZ.org, SearchEngineLand.com, EthicalSEOConsulting.com for SEO tips, tricks, and ethical white hat methods

3) Build quality relevant links to the quality content. Do this manually and not without the use of software. Share it with relevant bloggers and sites and if it's good content they will be happy to link to it.

The new Penguin update has shown a new light on how Google operates and will operate in the future. From my analysis of websites that are on 1st page of Google, massive amount of links do not matter as much as having the right niche industry link to you. We can no longer blindly add links that we can manipulate through article, directory, or commenting. Having a heavy about of "public" links could hurt our clients. Although it still works to a degree, it should be lightly used as a supplement, and NOT the main method of Ranking.

SEO Moz has a great explanation of what to do after the most recent Penguin update. To summarize:

1). Check your IT - is your website slow? Completely upgraded? And free of virus'?
2). Audit your links - Do you have low value links? Are you victim to link warfare? (When a competitor points spammy links at your site) Do you have enough high quality links?
3). Check your keyword density? Did you accidentally keyword stuff? Do you have keyword footer links?

In case you want to read the rest of the article from SEO moz: http://www.seomoz.org/blog/penguins-pand...at-the-zoo

Otherwise here are 5 things you can immediately do to send Google's Penguin packing for a long winter's hibernation: http://www.dinomiteseo.com/2012/05/01/5-...ng-winter/

Cheers,
Dino

Some may say this is luck or that it is fortunate but in reality if you treat your site like a book you cant go wrong with seo.

eg Your site is about red dogs so its reddogs.com

That's the title of the book reddogs.com
chapter 1. then red dog in london
chapter 2. how to clean red dogs
chapter 3. best redogs toys
chapter 4. red dogs pics
etc

See where I'm going with this each page on your site should be like a chapter of a book with interesting content after all its called a web page cos people read it.

So then you interlink each page e.g. red dogs London leads to chapter 2 with a simple to ''learn how to clean you red dogs with these tips'' now you have the words in quotes hyper linked

You do that for all and every page and you've made it easier for your reader to easily navigate through your great content.

Aside from that you've also done your meta tags description and meta keywords so now you've done all the on page seo properly

Next you take your book which is your website and show it off with other authors in your industry or niche about red dogs and that's it your on page seo is done and so is your off page seo simple as a book .

I've always done my seo like this and as a result I've missed many updates and didn't realize they had even occurred.

Always remember goggles job is to show best result so you make their job easier by showing the best books or pages i.e the best sites.

I'm not goona say I've always done this cos back in 2005 I knew about the possibility of the panda or anything actually quite the contrary I did this cos I just thought it was logical and made sense

The main thing we have to avoid is over optimization while getting links and getting links from untrustworthy sites.

The main idea of SEO is still the same. create quality content and get link from website that is relative to yours

The penguin disqualify a lot of spam link that's work before. They's why the old EMD + spam link + thin site doesn't work anymore. It is good because i hate those kind of low quality site as well
