So I want to become a groomer..?
Hi,

So I've been applying for entry level positions and have been researching/learning about the different breeds of dogs, care, grooming info, etc. But I keep having trouble finding anything on people's -experiences- as a groomer and highly recommended readings from those in the field.

So I'm wondering where I can hear/read first hand experiences from professional groomers in the industry (so I can know what to expect) as well as any recommended websites/readings on tools, care, cuts for types of dog breeds, etc. Since I'll be working with live animals I really want to indulge in my curiosity so I can minimize any bad mistakes. Recommended forums, groups, etc that I can join are welcome too!

Perhaps try volunteering as a bather to some local shops in return for training. Shops are reluctant to take a chance on newbies, because it's so common for them to either quit within the week because the job is not what they expected, or take enough training so they feel confident and then quit and open their own shop in competition. So make yourself as attractive as possible.

This is NOT playing with puppies all day, and it's not like grooming your own dog. You not only need to know basic coat care, safe clipping and scissoring, and the proper styles for the breeds, you also need to know dog behavior, first aid, sanitation, common health/skin issues, products etc. It's a physically demanding job, most of the dogs do NOT want to be groomed, you will be bitten, peed and pooped on, get anal gland stuff in your hair, you'll see infections, fleas, ticks, maggots, disgusting filthy animals and obnoxious clients.

Another couple of sources people don't think about are shelters and vets offices. There are a lot of people that help out with the animals as they come into shelters, and there are many volunteer groomers that help out. You might get some of your questions answered from there.

Good luck
