SEO (search engine optimization) is a fradulent industry; read the google documentation. Everything search engines use to rank and return search engine results is available without paying someone else to teach you how to do it.

the basics of SEO:

1 - meta tags should be relevant and unique to your site - find a niche if you need to, but you cant get top listings if your site sucks

2 - robots.txt file should be complete and also relevant to determine how often content changes... if google/yahoo/altavista spiders have to re-index your site every day, but your content only changes once a week, expect to be downgraded in your search results

3 - meaningful links that link back to you and are also highly rated (in their own meta search results!) are good... a ton of links to your site that have no relevance outside of linking to you are bad
