Facebook 3rd party apps?

I never use these things for the reason that I'm not real keen on the having to allow full privileges to my profile to marketing companies and data miners and that I have no idea what they will do with that data.

Despite this I know it's not a very effective means of insulation and treat facebook as it ought be treated, a public space and I assume that anyone can see the information even though it's a private profile.

My question though, is my abstaining from 3rd party apps making any difference at all? I may not install them but many people on my friends list do, does this mean that their apps can see everything they see including friends? Might I as well install the stupid apps and quizzes anyway since it probably makes no difference at all?

I'm sure it filters out some cheaply designed apps. But if someone wants your info its theirs no matter what you do.
