Is there a way to host internet connection at home?
I would like to host my own internet connection. I mean, when ISPs can do it, why couldn't I?
The problem is, I have absoloutly no idea how. I am from Serbia and we don't have that fast internet connections here. I pay $40 a month for an internet connection that downloads only 1024kbps.
So, my question is, like i said in the title, is there a way to host internet connection at home?

Thank you for all answers, B00z4 (: !
Well my home PC is actually very bad, it has only 4 gb RAM and intel core 2 duo 2.66 ghz and it is 4 years old.
BUT, at the end of this month, I am buying a new computer, costs around 2000 euro and I don't really understand, how can I actually host my internet connection, is there any tutorial on this? I can install linux/backtrack5 without a problem but is there a way I will be able to access WorldWideWeb, like I already am but without ISP, so that it is all the same as now, except I don't need to pay for an ISP. Thank you.

Yes. An Internet connexion is nothing more, essentially, than a computer that knows how to communicate with other computers. If your computer is a Linux PC, which is should be, then it already knows how to do this.

So, the only additional thing you need is a communication line to the next computer in your network. The faster, the better. If you want very fast speeds, be sure your connexion is a high-speed backbone network. But of course your little home PC is not that, is it?

Your computer network can only go as fast as the SLOWEST part.

Added: Your 'bad' machine is about the same as my Linux PC and I find it to be quite adequate.

Your ISP is simply a business that has computers than connect to other computers. They use broad-band, high-speed lines (wires, cables) to make the connexion. That is the network they provide. You connect to their computer; their computer connects with others all over the world. That is how the Internet works.

You can do the same. The software protocols are the same. Your PC talks the same packet language that your ISP's computer talk. Your only missing the piece where you attach your PC's network card to the backbone network. In order to bypass your local ISP company, just do what they do. Connect to another computer network. If Serbia does not have another network to which to connect, then you are out of luck.

Your ISP invested money in networking equipment and infrastructure so that they could collect fees from people to borrow it. They most likely contracted with another networking company down the road to connect to their network. And so on and so on.

Your question is like asking "Can I make my own beer so I do not have to pay the local pub to drink their beer"? The answer is yes. Go ahead.

Yes you can but you will need thousands to invest in network infrastructure and access to the internet backbone. This you bypass the isp. The reason you have an isp is because they have invested the money in infrastructure and have added to the backbone. So you may just be out of luck.
