How do I stop add-ons from slowing down certain specific sites?

I subscribe to several newspapers on line. Simply turning the page (i.e clicking on an article I want to read) has become laborious as something, possibly advertising material, seems to take for ever to load and it is up to 5 seconds before I can use the mouse cursor and scroll wheel, despite the page being right there in front of me. How do I speed this up?

If using chrome google add blockers but beware it may stop some pages from opening
