how to have a popular tumblr?

my tumblr is:

it's kind of hard to explain what it's about.
it's like.. vintagish, animals, pretty girls, hair, food, starbucks, seasonal, faded photos, beach/ocean, celebrities, quotes, couples
like a bit of everything

my question is what makes a great and popular tumblr?
as in the way it looks eg: themes etc

ATM mines white so the photos stand out
but would it look better with like an ocean background or something in your opinion?

okay right now my theme is a little boring. but most people like a blog that is aesthetically pleasing. you can download some stuff for that at totallylayouts.com snazzyspace.com and others. you could add a cursor, view counter, banner, some links, a scrollbar, a music player, and make sure you have a good background that goes well with your theme. there are some good themes already out there http://www.theme-gods.us/‎
