Would a faulty Xbox 360 struggle to connect to xbox live?

I have a very used xbox 360 which, despite always saying I'm connected to xbox live when I test the connection on screen, struggles to join any server on any game.
The power supply does get very hot, i have to disconnect it when the Xbox is not in use as leaving it on standby renders it with just a red light, would this cause further problems?
My internet connection is very good, my laptop works with full signal worelessley in the same room as the xbox, my xbox has been tried with wireless and wired connections, which both worked fine untill early February.
Any ideas? Thanks.

your wireless network adaptor could be faulty

could be your Internet speed..
if your downloading stuff in your laptop
it will affect your Xbox Internet speed

also try taking the whole Xbox apart and wiping down everything and hoovering inside the holes...

other than that I have no idea
