IS it possible to find out my IP adress without internet connection ?
I have re-installed my computer, running windows xp home version. I tried to connect to internet again (using dsl), but seem I can't find any connection or anything. I ve been told that its possible to connect to internet using IP adress, but as for now, I didnt find any in my pc, even using registry commands.

Is there a file where ip is stored, as the computer was connected to it before reinstalling ? If yes, could I possibly access it?

A computer will be assigned an IP address only after it connects to the internet. A disconnected computer will not have an IP address.
Please contact your Internet Service Provider for help in setting up your DSL connection.

If you can't connect after installing XP then you are missing drivers most importantly the network card drivers. You need to go the computer or motherboard manufacturer website and download them onto another computer and put on a usb drive or cd and install to your computer.

You can run Start>Run>cmd and then type ipconfig /all which will present you with any ip address information. If you get an address that starts with 169 it means you don't have a valid connection. If it gets an error or doesn't present any information windows can't detect the NIC and you should verify in Device Manager that your drivers are present and up to date.

Barry Manilow pointed out that you may have lost your Network Drivers which Is why you don't have an IP address and can't have access to the internet.

Once you connect your DSL Modem to your Computer your automatically connected as DSL is a Broadband Service which means always on and connected.
All DSL information is stored into the modem so because you re-installed windows has nothing to do with your internet.. unless you don't have Network drivers.

Take his advice on obtaining drivers for your Network Adapters.

The link he provides points to an unpublished web page so the answers are totally useless.

To get to your question:

Your IP address will depend upon whether you connect to your DSL ISP line just with a modem or you have a router. If you have a router, then this will be assigned an IP address by your ISP. Your router will assign a private local IP address to your computer. If you only have a modem, then your computer will be assigned its address by your ISP.

The computer will normally get its address using a service called DHCP. This will be directly with the ISP if you are using only a modem, but it will be to get a local address from your router if you have such a device.

To get networking operating correctly, then your computer must have the correct drivers installed, and the network adapter must be configured correctly.

Open Network Connections, and find the network entry for the connection you are trying to use to access the Internet. Look at the details of the connection and check that there is a valid IP address. If you have a router, then the address will probably start with one of the following:

10....
172.16.... to 172.31....
or
192.168....

If it starts with 169..., then the computer's networking is probably not set up correctly.

If you have a router, then the first step is to check that you can connect to the router and log in to its configuration pages. This should work even if you do not have a working ISP connection. Connecting to the router will prove that the basic network drivers are working. Next you need to check that the computer has the correct gateway and DNS addresses. Run the command

ipconfig /all

and look for the various addresses in the output. The gateway and DNS addresses will normally be the address of the router.

If you only have a modem, then the various addresses will be provided by your ISP.

I hope this helps.
