Spam is common on Twitter. Just block any spam accounts.

Yup, it's pretty common. There's also one where they invite you to their Mafia family. It's never the person who DMs you those. They have usually logged into some site that is allowed access to their Twitter feed (ie the Mafia game, twitter statistics, etc...). Because they are allowed access to their Twitter account they are allowed to send tweets and DMs without the person's knowledge. Or as someone has already said they could have got their accounts hacked another way and it's the hacker sending those.

There's a few ways that you could stop this kind of thing.

1. Block them. If you block them they can't send you DMs anymore. But this has the other effect of you not following them anymore and them not following you anymore which isn't great if it's someone you have regular chats with or is a favourite tweeter. That leaves option 2 or the more practical option 3;

2. Get in touch with the people who send you the DMs and ask them one of 2 things;
(i) To change their password so the hacker won't have their details anymore. But this way the hacker could always re-hack them.
(ii) To go to their account settings, then to the applications tab, then to deny access to any suspicious applications such as who.unfollowed.me and the Mafia game (they could also turn off other less suspicious apps such as getglue and tumblr but it's probably not those that are doing it so those are fine to be left). If they do this there's less of a chance of receiving these DMs and you'll still be following them and they you so you don't lose a favourite tweeter;

3. Just ignore it and delete any of these DMs when you get them. This has a similar effect to number 2 (you'll still be following a favourite tweeter and they you) but also might be annoying to some if these DMs come quite often. But it shouldn't be a problem as it only takes a few seconds to delete the DMs.
