Why do so many Marines say not to join...?
I've noticed that most of the negative comments on the Marines' facebook page are from Marines themselves. They say not to join and go to college instead, and that it's nothing like what you thought you when you hit the fleet. What's the fleet? I'm still going to join, but just curious why so many Marines post negative things like that.
I've heard college isn't all it's cracked up to be either, so...

It's difficult both mentally and physically. Many joined impulsively without doing their homework, and ended up regretting it wishing they would have went the college route. There are plenty of people that do not regret it and see qualities in themselves that will never fade. That list grows the longer that they're out, maturity and time give you a stronger respect for having served and even more so for Marines. Oh the fleet is the regular Marine corps. (FMF: Fleet Marine Force) not embassy, recruiter, recruit, school, or pentagon, D.C. duty.

People who join the Marines typically have the attention whore mindset. They see people gawking over Marines and their uniform. However, being in the military is very different. You don't get women falling head over heels for military men within 50 miles of a military base, which is where you'll spend 99% of your time (pretty much unless your on leave). Then they think combat is cool until they are holding their friend watching the life drain from their face, and told to press on.

They made an impulsive decision and fell for the USMC propaganda machine. I thought about it and made a smarter choice.

The fleet refers to the operating forces of the Marine Corps which consist of active duty Marines. Each unit is different. In some unit, leaders treat Marines like 4 year olds when the situation doesn't require it (if Marines were that immature they shouldn't join anyways.) In other units, they treat you better. Your assignments and job may also determine which unit you go to as well.

College is good when you know what you want to major in and if you take the time to research the job market in that education field. If you don't do either, then it's gonna suck in the long run.
