Would Wifi lower your internet speed?
Hi, I was looking to add a Wifi router and was wondering by how much it would lower my internet speed when compared to cable connection? I'm worried because I have the lowest (1 mbps) connection.
I'm presuming by laws of physics that Wifi should technically be stronger than cable (as its in waves) but things depend as it goes through the router and the waves disperse thus making it slower overall.... But would I expect slower connections with Wifi? Thank you... Also, is 1 mbps good enough for browsing comfortably? I can see 480p videos + school work and social media without lag with Ethernet... might that be slower with Wifi? Thanks for your time, guys... Ads |

I use a router so I can use my laptop out on the porch in the summer. I've never noticed any difference.

You likely won't see a difference. Let's say you used wireless n. That standard will pump data at 300Mbps (maximum, more likely it's 130-150Mbps). Those numbers are high above your 1 Mbps connection, so wifi shouldn't bottleneck ya.
You can always run a speedtest.net test with wired then with wifi and see if you get the same speed. |

No , I pinged google on my dad's laptop with wifi and it was like 1 or 2 milliseconds more than the Ethernet connection , and i'm using the most basic DLink wifi router it has to offer , there are much more complicated wireless routers that use several bands , dual , triple bands and etc. and deliver internet speed of up to 300 Mbps
