want to start with a free blog and know a little about getting my writing to show up on search engines are there any good free blog sites that can maximize being discovered by search engine or how do people normally find someone's blog

There are plenty of free website makers which you can, such as weebly or webnode. However none of these make great websites. You could always make a facebook page. Or for that matter and social network site like tumblr. but for a good quality blog you'll need to make a real site which would most probably cost you.
