Meta tags are necessary, but they are not what makes or breaks your site's SEO. My best advice for SEO:

Be original. Avoid copying anything, from text to images. The more unique your site is, the better is will do.

Be genuine. Don't try to outsmart Google and manipulate it. There are lots of very smart people at Google, and they are good at sniffing out BS. If they discover SEO BS, they will penalize your site for it.

Don't put links to other websites on your site. If you have to, make them rel="nofollow" links.

Make frequent additions to your site. The more often you add new things, the more often your site will be crawled.
