No, read the Help pages. The take (I think it was 5%) -only- if the project is -funded-. There is no $ up front and there is no charge if the funding fails. Users are not charged until funding closes -and- it reached the target.

I heard recently that they did $480M in funded projects last year. 5% of $480M is $24M so that's a huge incentive for them to keep going.
