how does mystery gift work in pokemon X?

Mystery Gift is how you obtain event Pokémon when there is an event running, I don't believe there is currently one but the next one will probably be for Diancie.

It works just like how it did in Gen IV, and V and since your actually new to Pokemon I'll fully explain(but it's very easy).
There's no need for Pokebank, and it's true that it's only active for a short time so make sure to get them. They'll usually run for about a week to a month.
First there's two main types one that's done over Wi-Fi, and the other through Wireless(or Infared same thing), and then there's one with a Code. You can access Mystery Gift from the main menu by selecting "Mystery Gift". Next when getting a Mystery Gift select Receive Gift, from there choose the correct option that the Gift is received by. It'll take a minute or less and you'll receive the gift and it's Gift card, from there start up the game and talk to the Mystery Gift NPC that appears in the Pokemon Center to receive your gift.

Gifts received over Wi-Fi need an internet connection this one can be done from anywhere that has Wi-Fi.
Gifts received over Wireless are one's exclusive mainly at Gamestop(different stores in other countries), you must go to the store and be within range.
Gifts received over Infrared work if one of your friends has a Gift card that you don't have. Simply connect by Infrared(same as wireless) and you'll receive it.
Gifts received over Code requires internet connection after connecting simply type in the code.
