That's the easiest part! Look through the eye machine for 10 seconds- and done! You can find all the info on the permit test step by step here: http://driving-tests.org/new-york/ in FAQ section. You can also practice here for free to prepare for the written part of the test, there are FB comments that you might find helpful.
